Xfinity WiFi Setup: How to Self-Install, Activate and Connect

Getting Xfinity WiFi running yourself takes three steps: connect the gateway, activate it, and connect your devices. This guide walks through each one and the fixes for the problems that most often appear on the first day.

What you need

Your Xfinity gateway, its power cord, a coax cable and a working coax wall outlet. You also need your Xfinity ID and a phone with the Xfinity app, or a computer to reach Xfinity's activation page.

Step-by-step Xfinity WiFi setup

  1. Choose the coax outlet, ideally without a splitter.

  2. Screw the coax cable finger-tight into the wall outlet and into the gateway.

  3. Plug the gateway's power cord into the wall and the gateway.

  4. Wait for the light to start. During activation it may blink white, and this is normal.

  5. Open the Xfinity app, sign in and follow the activation prompts, or use the activation steps in your kit.

  6. Wait for the gateway to finish; the light should settle on steady white, sometimes with a purple tint.

  7. Connect your devices using the network name and password on the label, then change them (see our Xfinity WiFi password guide).

Connect a phone or laptop to your Xfinity WiFi

Open WiFi settings on the device, select the network name from the label, enter the password and wait for it to connect. To pair a device with WPS, press the WPS button on the gateway and start pairing on the device; the gateway will blink blue while it waits (see Xfinity router blinking blue).

Where to put the gateway

Place it in a central, open spot away from microwaves and thick walls, and give it airflow. Heat and clutter cause dropouts.

Common Xfinity setup problems

The light stays orange

Wait about 15 minutes. If it stays orange, check the coax, remove splitters and check the outage status. See our guide to an Xfinity router blinking orange.

Activation does not finish

Restart the gateway and try again in the app. If it still fails, contact Xfinity and ask them to check that the gateway is registered to your account.

WiFi works but is slow or drops

Move the gateway, restart it and try the 5 GHz network near the gateway. See Xfinity WiFi not working for more.

Using your own equipment

If you buy your own modem and router, check that the modem is compatible with Xfinity and activate it on your account. Bringing your own equipment removes the equipment rental fee, but you become responsible for replacing it.

The bottom line

Coax first, power second, activate in the app and change the default password. Give the gateway 15 minutes before you troubleshoot an orange light.

Frequently asked questions about xfinity wifi setup

How do I set up Xfinity WiFi?

Connect the coax cable and power to the gateway, wait for it to power up, then activate it in the Xfinity app or on Xfinity's activation page. Connect your devices using the network name and password on the gateway label.

How long does Xfinity activation take?

Often 30 to 45 minutes, sometimes less. The light may blink while the gateway activates.

Why is my new gateway blinking orange or white?

White blinking is normal during activation. Orange means it is still connecting. Wait 15 minutes and check the coax cable before troubleshooting.

Can I use my own modem or router with Xfinity?

Generally yes, with a compatible modem. Check current compatibility guidance before buying, and activate it on your account.

How do I connect a device to my Xfinity WiFi?

Choose the network name on your device and enter the password from the gateway label or the one you set in the Xfinity app.
