Spectrum WiFi Not Working: How to Diagnose and Fix It

Spectrum WiFi can fail for a dozen reasons, but the fix path is short: work out whether the problem is Spectrum, your equipment, or a single device, then apply the matching fix. This guide walks through nine fixes in the order that solves the most cases.
First: find out how big the problem is
Ask three questions before you touch anything. Are all devices affected, or just one? Do wired devices work when WiFi does not? What color are the lights on the modem and router? If every device is offline, the problem is the router, the modem or the line. If only one device fails, the fix is on that device (see fix 8).
9 fixes for Spectrum WiFi that is not working
1. Check for a Spectrum outage
Open the My Spectrum app using mobile data and look for an outage at your address. If there is one, wait it out; nothing you do at home will help.
2. Read the lights
A modem Online light that is off or blinking means the modem has lost its connection. A red or blinking router light means the router cannot reach the internet. Our guide to a Spectrum router blinking red explains the patterns.
3. Restart in the right order
Unplug the modem and the router for 60 seconds. Plug in the modem, wait for its Online light to turn solid, then plug in the router and wait a few minutes.
4. Check every cable
Tighten the coax cable at the wall and modem. Press the Ethernet cable firmly into both ports. Replace anything damaged, and remove splitters if you can.
5. Reset from the My Spectrum app
In the app, open your internet equipment and use the reset option. This re-provisions the modem from Spectrum's side.
6. Fix WiFi drops and slow speeds
If the connection works but keeps dropping or crawls, move the router to an open, central spot, away from microwaves, cordless phones and thick walls. Try the 5 GHz network near the router for speed and the 2.4 GHz network for range. Disconnect devices you do not use and restart the router once.
7. Check for overheating
A hot router drops connections. Give it airflow and move it out of cabinets.
8. Fix a single device
If only one phone or laptop fails, turn WiFi off and on, forget the network and reconnect with the password, restart the device and update its software. If other devices work, the router is fine.
9. Factory reset, then escalate
If nothing worked, factory reset the router (see how to reset a Spectrum router), then contact Spectrum. Ask them to check signal levels and replace failing leased equipment.
Connected to WiFi but no internet
That combination means your device reaches the router but the router cannot reach Spectrum. Restart the modem first, confirm its Online light is solid, then restart the router. If the modem light is solid and the internet is still gone, the router is the likely culprit.
The bottom line
Rule out an outage, restart in order, check cables, and only then reset. If WiFi keeps dropping, look at placement and ask Spectrum to check the line.
Frequently asked questions about spectrum wifi not working
Why is my Spectrum WiFi not working?
The usual causes are a local outage, a modem or router that needs a restart, a loose cable, an overloaded network or a problem on a single device. Test whether every device is affected to narrow it down.
Why does my Spectrum WiFi say connected but no internet?
Your device is connected to the router, but the router is not reaching the internet. That points to the modem, the outage status or the line. Restart the modem first, then the router.
Why does Spectrum WiFi keep disconnecting?
Frequent drops usually come from signal interference, router placement, overheating, an aging router or a weak line signal. Move the router into the open, restart it and ask Spectrum to check signal levels if it continues.
How do I know if it is my router or Spectrum?
If wired and wireless devices all lose internet and the modem light is blinking, the issue is likely with Spectrum or the modem. If the modem is solid but WiFi is missing, focus on the router.
Can I fix Spectrum WiFi without calling support?
Most of the time, yes. Check the outage status, restart the modem then the router, reseat cables and reset from the app. Call only if the light will not settle or you suspect a line problem.
